This photo was taken in a beautifully finished master suite that was added on to the original home—a smart investment that added both space and value. However, during construction, a critical detail was overlooked: the location of the fireplace ash dump.
The metal door visible in the photo opens directly into the firebox, placing it inside a living space—an extremely hazardous situation. This type of setup poses a serious risk of fire and potential carbon monoxide exposure, both of which can endanger the safety of the family living in the home.
Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case. I’ve come across similar issues in multiple homes, and I always make it a point to inform clients so it can be addressed properly.
When planning an addition, especially around existing systems like fireplaces, it's vital to think ahead and consult professionals to avoid hidden hazards. Your safety—and that of future homeowners—depends on it.
